What we publish

APIA publishes datasets, not opinion. Each project sets out its sources and its method, and the underlying data is available to anyone who wants to check it or use it.

This page lists what APIA publishes — not every dataset within it. A single project may carry many datasets; those are listed on the project’s own site.

Too Hard BasketLaunching Q4 2026

When a parliamentary committee reports, government is expected to respond. Often it does. Sometimes it responds late. Sometimes it never responds at all, and nothing marks the fact.

Too Hard Basket is a public record of what happens after the report: whether government responded, how long it took, and whether the response engaged with the committee’s recommendations or closed the file without answering them.

What comes next

Too Hard Basket begins with one record — Senate committee reports awaiting a government response — and will extend to House of Representatives committees, to the state and territory parliaments, and to related records of the same kind: questions taken on notice, orders for the production of documents, statutory reviews that fall due and are not done, recommendations from royal commissions and the Auditor-General, and statutory deadlines that pass unmet.

It will also go deeper rather than only wider. Recording that a response arrived is not the same as recording what it said, and the harder measure — for each recommendation a committee made, did the government state a position on it? — is the one that matters most. That work is under way and is not published yet. When it is, this page will say so.

APIA’s job is to publish these and to keep publishing them. We would rather add one dataset a quarter and still be here in ten years than announce twenty and maintain none.
