Why APIA exists
Public-interest data projects tend to start well and then rot. What is usually missing is not effort. It is an accountable institutional home.
Someone builds something useful, maintains it while the interest lasts, and within a few years the figures are stale, the links are broken, or the site is gone. The work was real; the structure holding it up was one person’s enthusiasm.
APIA is the structure. It is an incorporated not-for-profit whose purpose is to collect, publish and maintain public-interest datasets, and to keep them accurate and available over time — so that a figure published today can still be cited, and still be checked, years from now.
What we do
We publish data drawn from the public record. We publish the sources and the method behind every figure. We correct errors, visibly, when we find them or when someone shows us one.
What we don’t do
We don’t campaign, lobby, or argue for policy positions. We don’t sell products or services. We don’t accept money on terms that would affect what we publish or how we publish it.
The distinction matters, so we will state it plainly: publishing a verifiable record of what government did is not the same as advocating for what it should do. We do the first and not the second — including when the record is unflattering.
Independence
APIA is non-partisan. It is not affiliated with, and does not support or oppose, any political party, any candidate for public office, or any holder of public office. It does not engage in political campaigning.
APIA is self-funded by its founder and has received no external funding to date.
Disclosure
Alan Hewitt, APIA’s President, volunteers in an unpaid capacity in the electorate office of Kate Chaney MP, assisting with digital systems. APIA receives no funding, direction or editorial input from any parliamentarian, political office or party. Kate Chaney has no role in APIA and no involvement in what it publishes.
We disclose this because it is the kind of thing that should be found here rather than somewhere else.
